On the 17th June the House Part on Tour arrived in Royton, at the Royton Youth Centre.
Sadia Akram from OHIP said “the House Party on Tour gives us an opportunity to show residents different parts of the borough and provides an opportunity for people from different areas and communities to meet and find out about each other. This helps to foster community cohesion and breakdown myths and stereotypes.”
The theme of the Royton events was ‘Gender Roles’. The session started with a play called “Strike a Light! A Match Girl’s Story”, a one woman show developed by the Peoples’ History Museum in Salford it charted the experience of a girl involved in a Match Factory strike in 1888.
After the play the residents split into smaller groups to discuss gender roles. Which many of the residents who attended said was the most enjoyable part of the session, with one resident saying “it was great to have every one talking, with the different cultures and different ages” and another saying “the different cultures got on really well. If you get down to brass tacks we do a lot of things and think a lot of things alike”.
